Evelyn Rosenberg developed an explosive new art form called Detonography when she began to experiment with explosives at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. This process allows her to create lightweight, bas-relief sculpture by laying a flat sheet explosive over metal layers which rest upon a mold that she has created. Her works have been described as large scale printmaking, but with a richness and color closer to that of jewelry.
Smithsonian Magazine acknowledged her art form in 1987 saying, "She's an artist whose explosives make a lasting impression. Evelyn Rosenberg gets a big bang out of her art. She creates sculpture from metals that are molded by explosions in the desert."
Rosenberg and her art have been featured on the Today Show, Nightline, NPR, the BBC and on Japanese and Russian television. She has completed numerous commissioned pieces of public art in New Mexico, including "Scales of Justice" in the Courthouse Plaza in Albuquerque, "Evolutionary Geoscope II" at the Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, and "Clock of Dreams" at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
