Mark Ian Saxe

Dixon

2023 Recipient, Stone Sculptor

Mark Saxe is a sculptor and stonecarver who has been working with stone for over 45 years. After serving in Vietnam, he traveled to Europe to forget the war and to find a new beginning. It was there he fell in love with stone: the cathedrals, bridges, sculptures, quarries, and the chiseled word. Mark's business, Southwest Stoneworks, was established in 1975. In 2001, he founded the annual Saxe Stonecarving Workshops, now in its 17th year. Through this series of intensive seven-day classes, Mark has been able to share his love of stonecarving by inviting world-class instructors to teach students from across the globe every summer. Adjacent to the stoneyard is Rift Gallery, which he has owned with his wife, ceramist Betsy Williams, since 2005.
