the Governor's Arts Award Winners

Bill Fegan

Raton

2007 Recipient, Major Contributor to the Arts

Bill Fegan has played a leading role in the arts revitalization effort in northeastern New Mexico for more than three decades. He spearheaded the restoration of the historic Shuler Theater in Raton and helped launch numerous organizations, including the Raton Arts and Humanities Council, Raton Performing Arts Association, Raton Choral Society and the Raton Community Corporation. He first arrived in Raton in 1964, coming from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

For his contributions to the arts in Raton, Fegan was given the first "Raton Treasure Award" by the Raton Arts Council in 2001. The city will soon cast his name in bronze as the first honoree on the "Raton Trail of Honor."

Fegan's entire life has been devoted to the arts, says nominator Lorena Sue Fleming. "He is such a deserving candidate—a unique individual with the compassion to touch an individual child and the ability to lead the multitudes."
